Thinking + Doing + Engaging = Success with the Illustrative Math Curriculum—K-8

July 23 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Are your students thinking, collaborating, and actively engaging in your Illustrative Math classroom? This session is based on Peter Liljedahl’s research and book, “Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics: 14 Practices for Enhancing Learning.” This research provides concrete evidence-based strategies for getting students thinking and learning in math classes.  These practices align with Illustrative Math’s problem-based instruction model, guiding and generating student thinking, while providing access to grade level math content and rich mathematical tasks. Together, we will navigate three of these teaching practices to get you started in building a thinking classroom with Illustrative Math while engaging in math content from grades K-8!

Participants will be able to:

Create structures for the stage one of “Building Thinking Classroom in Mathematics” based on the research from  Peter Liljedahl: Giving students thinking tasks, forming visibly random groups and using vertical non-permanent surfaces

Implement  these concrete evidence-based strategies with the Illustrative Math Curriculum’s problem-based instruction model in order to promote  student’s thinking, learning and collaborating about mathematics.
