Thinking + Doing  + Engaging = Success in Math! Part 1

How many of your students are doing the thinking in your math classroom? This session is  based on Peter Liljedahl’s book, ”Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics: 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning.” Peter Liljedahl’s research provides concrete evidence-based strategies for getting students thinking and learning in math classes.  We will explore four of these practices:  the types of tasks we use, the way we group students, where students work and where, when, and how tasks are given. The goal of this session is to get students thinking by:

  • Using rich problem solving tasks with low floor, high ceiling, and open middle.
  • Visibly random groups
  • Vertical non-permanent work surfaces
  • Giving verbal instructions
